The company’s engagement activity is born from the heart of Russell’s
creative process and his practice.
“Meeting the staff face to face rather than just hearing about them made a big difference in understanding their job and what they bring to it...”

The company’s participation activity is born from the heart of Maliphant’s creative process, merging techniques from classical and contemporary dance with principals and concepts from Bodywork and Martial arts. Activities offered explore an extensive range of disciplines from classical ballet, contact improvisation, yoga, capoeira and martial arts. “Russell’s lecture demonstrations and practical explorations allowed me to develop a new awareness of my body and its movement potential. It helped to connect the dots with regards my knowledge of movement”

"The classes themselves were structured in a non-linear technique which can suit anyone. I especially welcomed the different teacher’s approach to teaching yet keeping within Russell's philosophy in movement and skeletal structure.
It was really good when teachers mentioned participants’ names during the class. It gave a personal touch and spurred
everyone on”

Dance Encounter Fund
Together with our partner the Victoria Wood Foundation, RMDC has established the Dance Encounter Fund (DEF) which will provide subsidised workshops and tickets for young people across the UK.
DEF will enable us to make experiencing and engaging with live performance a reality for diverse young people, who might not otherwise have this opportunity.
We will work in partnership with our touring venues to identify and engage schools and colleges and reach out to harder to reach young people aged 25 years and under in up to ten cities across the UK. In addition to delivering workshops, we will create educational tools and digital resources around the production which will be made available to participating schools and venues. This offer is suitable for learners at Key Stage 4 and beyond.
We will launch DEF in April 2022, in line with the tour of our first post-Covid production entitled “Pollock” and inspired by the work of US abstract expressionist fine artist Jackson Pollock.
DEF provides a unique opportunity to diversify our audience and engage younger people. The programme will enable RMDC to strengthen our networks with venues and schools across the UK. Furthermore, we will deliver an artistic and civic contribution through education and community building in chosen locations across the UK.
Company Classes
Russell and his company dancers - Alethia Antonia, Edd Arnold, Grace Jabbari, Folu Odimayo and Will Thompson - returned for a third time to deliver online company classes in February and March 2021.
Classes are focused on increasing body awareness, articulation and strength whilst exploring choices in movement and dynamics within a playful practice. Drawing on anatomical information as a resource for movement and improvisation, class will encourage connection, balance and listening to the body in movement.
The classes are suitable for professionals, dancers in training and those with a few years physical training or movement experience.
Participants must be aged 18 years or over.
We hope to deliver online classes again in the near future, so keep an eye out on our website and social media pages for news!
Placements for Dancers in Training
As a part of our ongoing commitment to offering student placements, we run a 1-3 day package for up to twenty students to take class with one of Russell Maliphant’s company dancers. Participants will also meet our staff team and learn about their roles, participate in workshops that outline and demonstrate how we deliver our outreach work, observe rehearsals where possible, and more!
In 2020 we have offered placements to students from Rambert School, Trinity Laban, Middlesex University and Canterbury Christ Church University as well as some independent trainee dancers.
Work Experience Programme
We offer two student work experience placements per academic year. This is not a dance-based student placement, but more an opportunity to understand and experience the inner workings of a touring dance company.
Work experience placements can take many forms - either full weeks or individual days - offering various levels of experience in project management, administration, marketing, production, event management and education.
Due to current Covid - 19 restrictions, we are not able to offer this form of work experience placement at present. We will provide updates here when we are able to resume .
